In the northeast of the city, FRANKLIN has emerged as Mannheim’s newest neighborhood. One of the largest urban development projects in Germany, it has been planned from the ground up as a smart neighborhood. Covering an area as large as Mannheim’s downtown, it will be home to around 10,000 people. Street names such as Abraham-Lincoln-Allee and George-Washington-Straße pay homage to the area’s history. Four high-rises shaped like the letters H O M E (three of which are already standing) and the “Grüne Mitte”—a green hill serving as the neighborhood’s center—are just a few of the many architectural highlights. Children of all ages can let off steam here at numerous new and spacious playgrounds. FRANKLIN features excellent connections to public transit and the bike network, its own e-bus line, and the FRANKLIN Mobil, which is more than just car-sharing: electric scooters and cargo bikes are also part of the fleet. Another innovative feature is the neighborhood’s heat generation system, which uses renewable energy sources and an integrated energy management system that consolidates measurement and system data in real time to optimize the supply of electricity and heat.
